A note from project founder Katie Nelson: 
 

"I used to live on Cape Ann, north of Boston.  I always enjoyed walking around the cape and looking at the house signs on all the colonial houses. They were small wooden signs that usually read something like “Captain Peter Smith, 1756.” Since moving to Utah, I’ve always wished we had that here. You don’t need more than a name and date on a house to feel a sense of roots, a sense of history.  So we launched our own house sign project, opting to include a sentence on each house sign that tells the story of its first inhabitants.

We also wanted it to be an egalitarian project, much like our work on 2nd Street.  We are not here to be the gatekeepers of history, nor to decide which houses are worthy of a sign.  If a house is 75+ years old, it’s historic.  It gets a sign. In this way we aim to celebrate the Weber County legacy of penniless immigrants, dreaming farmers, ragtag railroad adventurers who built humble homes from nothing. We also make sure that historical women are given equal spotlight to men.  So I suppose we’re taking the traditional signs and filtering out the historical classism and sexism. So far we’ve met with nothing but enthusiasm, and have been contacted by other Utah counties who want to mimic the project."
